Locating Early
Le Stranges

The founder, Roland Extraneus, began his military career in Norfolk c.1100 A.D. according to records, and three of his sons migrated westward to Shropshire before 1155 when they were employed on the march by Henry II for England's defence against the Welsh. In Shropshire 3 baronies of le Strange were created at Ellesmere, Knokyn (Knockin), and Blakemere (Blackmere), under the Plantagenets. The le Strange name became extinct in Shropshire but survives in Norfolk through Roland's direct descendants.
